F. Allen “Tex” Harris (“Mr. AFSA”)—Foreign Service Career Issues

Being a diplomat is a fantastic opportunity.  You are paid by the Untied States Government to go overseas and to get to know the most interesting and most influential people in the country to which you are assigned.  Your job is to influence them.  It is a wonderful opportunity to extend your ability, knowledge, interests.  The second thing is that, every three or four years, the Department of State picks you up from one country where you have become comfortable and knowledgeable and puts you in a brand new one.  So it’s a cycle of learning experiences.  Some people don’t like that.  For myself, it is just a series of great and exciting challenges.
