Edmund Sixtus Muskie -- 1980-1981

Edmund Muskie, a former Senator, Governor of Maine and nationally known political figure, briefly served as Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter following Cyrus Vance’s unexpected resignation in mid-1980. His time in office was essentially preoccupied by efforts to secure the release of U.S. hostages in Iran through diplomatic approaches through the United Nations and individual countries. He brought great dignity to his position and helped reassure the country during a period of national humiliation.
